Arturo Sandoval
Arturo Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small village in the province of Havana, Cuba. He started playing music at the age of thirteen in the village band. After playing many instruments he finally settled on the trumpet. In 1977 he met Dizzy Gillespie who became a friend and mentor and helped him defect from Cuba while on tour with the United Nations Orchestra, becoming an American citizen in 1998.

Sandoval has performed in the White House and at the Super Bowl. He has won numerous Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards and one Emmy for his score on the film about his life, For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2000) starring Andy Garcia.
To add to his honors Sandoval received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 and slated to receive the Kennedy Center Honor this December, 2024.
